Wow! What a wild weekend for most of our Northwest sports teams!
Sunday was a day to remember for the Portland Winterhawks, who skated to a 5-1 win at Edmonton to win the WHL Championship 4 games to 2! Ty Rattie's hat trick allowed him to break the WHL record for career playoff goals and earned him MVP honors. The Winterhawks advance to the Memorial Cup, May 17-26 in Saskatoon where they'll take on the champions of the Quebec Major Junior HOckey League and the champs of the Ontario Hockey League.
The Portland Timbers shutout Chivas USA 3-0 in front of a sellout crowd at Jeld-Wen Field. That extends the Timbers MLS franchise-record unbeaten streak to nine games.
The Portland Thorns remain undefeated after winning 2-0 at Chicago. Alex Morgan, a guest last week on both Wheels at Work and Beaver Nation Live on Fox Sports Radio 620, scored another goal for the Thorns who are now 4-0-1 this season.
Both the Oregon and Oregon State baseball teams completed weekend 3-game sweeps. The Ducks improved to 40-11 by winning a third straight game at Ohio State 1-0. The Beavers moved one game ahead of the Ducks in the Pac-12 standings by winning three straight at Stanford. The Beavers won the series finale Sunday 5-4 to improve to 41 and 8, 20-4 in Pac-12 play. The Ducks are one game behind the first-place Beavers at 19-5. And my, oh my! The Ducks host the Beavers in a crucial 3-game series this weekend in Eugene!
The Oregon men and women's teams completed a sweep of the Pac-12 Track and Field Chmapionships. It's the fifth straight year that the Ducks have swept the conference crowns.
Hey, I know there were other sporting events going on this weekend (Tiger wins again, the Warriors get even with the Spurs and other NBA and NHL playoff games, etc.) but I love it when our "Home Teams" have as much success as they did this weekend! Join me tonight for Beaver Nation Live (7-8pm on Fox Sports Radio 620) and call in to let me know which of the weekend events you were most excited about!
